Every wall in this 120-year-old Asheville farmhouse, a genuine modern farmhouse restoration, held a different surprise. Opening up the home revealed outdated wiring and aging cast iron pipes, both well past their usable life and in need of full replacement to bring the home into modern compliance. At the same time, the original wood paneling throughout the house had held up remarkably well, hidden character worth preserving rather than removing.
Rather than treating the whole home the same way, each area called for its own decision. Systems that posed real safety or functionality issues, the wiring and plumbing, were fully replaced and brought up to current standards. But the original wood paneling was carefully restored instead of stripped out, keeping the character that made this farmhouse worth saving in the first place.
The finished home runs on modern electrical and plumbing systems while still carrying the character of a 120-year-old Asheville farmhouse, restored wood paneling included. It's a 2,560-square-foot, three-bedroom, three-bathroom home that works like a new build but still feels like the house it always was.
